The cemetery was established in the fall of 1843 with its first burial, that of one-year-old Sophia Ingrebretson. Two years later, a log church was initially erected, which was used for 25 years. That log church was the first Norwegian Lutheran church built in the United States. It was later dismantled in 1904 and now sits on the campus of the Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.
